Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able, at threshold level, to:

Choose an appropriate architecture for a web application. 
Design and implement server-side programs written using one or more suitable technologies. 
Use appropriate features of commonly available technologies to achieve web page effects. 
Link a web application to a database. 
Reflect and report on the technical and market trends and emerging professional practice in web development issues. 
Timetable

Teaching normally consists of 10 x 2-hour lecture sessions plus a 1-hour practical for each group of students.

Students must attend the lectures and the practical.

Learning activities

Each course session will consist of a lecture followed by a practical undertaken in a lab.

Students are expected to read extensively and practice their programming skills in their own time.

Students should not attempt this course unless they meet the programming prerequisite.

Assessments and their weighting

Exam (60%)

At end of semester. Official examination timetable available from the Admin Office.

2 hours duration. Closed book. The exam consists of 8 questions, in two sections of 4 each. You must answer 4 questions, including at least 1 and no more than 3 from each section. Each section must be answered in a separate answer book.

Pass mark 40%.

Supervised work session (40%)

A one-day programming exercise working in groups. Date Wednesday 9th May 2007; starting at 0930 and concluding at 1630 with an hour's allowance for lunch. Groups may self-select prior to the day. The exercise will include both a group and an individual element. Follow this link for more information.

The submission date for the individual element will be Wednesday 16th May 2007.

Pass mark 40%.

To pass the unit overall, each student must get an overall mark of 40% AND at least 30% in each assessment component.

Feedback arrangements (staff to students) No formal arrangements. Students can discuss issues that arise at any time with the staff responsible for delivering the unit.

Students will be invited to complete a course evaluation questionnaire at the end of the course.
