Previous meeting's notes

Agenda Notes Action Status

Actions carried forward

Actions completed are noted in the minutes of the previous meeting.

Perception server setup

AW reported on the current state of the Perception server. There is an outstanding technical problem involving connecting it to the Oracle database - Craig Browning is waiting for info from Rick Thornton (who is off sick).

Regarding service provision issues, AW reported that OLAG had produced a document describing protocols for running a Perception service.

AW to hunt out the document Ongoing

Commerce Server

EK reported that Craig has started rebuilding Carp. Access is impacted by need for cache disablement and BizDesk software locally installed.

EK to ask Craig Browning to write instructions for accessing it elsewhere Done

Exclusive chat facilities

It had been noted that students frequently needed exclusive chat facilities. The chat rooms in WebCT and the like were open to all students taking the course. What was needed was a chat facility that allowed students working in a group to keep others out.

EK reported that Jabber might be available.

EK to talk to JLS. Ongoing

MATLAB

Ivan Jordanov had raised a need for additional packs for MATLAB. AW to look at licence implications Ongoing

Dreamweaver MX 2004 and other bits

EK reported that JSB's requests (made 4/2/04) had been ordered.

EK reported that the orders had been placed. He would check with CB as to whether copies could be downloaded from Macromedia's website.

EK to check with Chris Boorman EK passed CDs and licences to JSB shortly after the meeting

Lion Gate Postgraduate Centre facilities

TO reported that he had 8 decent (P3-500) and 2 other PCs ready to install and had asked for 10 network points to be opened up. He expected the facility to be available in about 2 weeks.

JSB authorised the expenditure of £20 on cabling.

TO EK to chase

Printers for Kerrylyn and Karen/Cheryl

EK reported that these had been ordered. EK to notify JSB of spec and price Done

Support policy for non-standard systems

SB tabled a draft leaflet. EK/SB to keep working on it. EK/SB Ongoing

Support in Lion Gate

The Committee noted Dean Ledger's iminent departure from the University and that the arrangements for replacing him had not yet been agreed. EK was to talk to Steve Hand and Roger Beresford Done

Outstanding requests/orders: software

IMPATICA

Terry King has requested two copies of a product called IMPATICA (Impatica for PowerPoint, http://www.impatica.com); one for me and one for Emma DW. It is a product to add streamed sound to PowerPoint presentations that run in Web browsers (and it runs within WebCT). This is for the MSc eLT for Semster 1 next year. Clearly there will be have to be some jiggery-pockery with the WebCT server before the product is run, but whether we need just two personal copies or personal copies + server software I don't know. Please could ISO find out what we need and could you buy it. I don't think it's very expensive - they seem to have a price for education. EK to investigate Ongoing

Outstanding requests/orders: hardware

Strategy/policy

Major projects

Operational issues

Oracle

Richard Healey is encountering serious problems in getting Oracle forms to run. EK to draw together the necessary ISO resources to attempt to solve this problem EK had spoken to Julian Lintell-Smith and Rick Thornton

Website rationalisation

See http://userweb.port.ac.uk/~briggsj/ccc/students/index.htm

Are all the pages up to date? Can we rationalise material duplicated between them?

JSB to ask Mark Ferguson to permit access to pages for SB, TO and possibly LB Ongoing

SPSS v11

Terry King had raised an issue about the current network distribution of SPSS V11, which still has the licence for Oct 2003, so even after its distributed, it won't run. Great. Needs a new licence file or something.

EK to investigate ways it might be made easier EK had informed Terry about the update icon.
Addendum to (1). The Library only stocks 6 copies of SPSS all of which are on 7-day loan. Would it be possible to ask them to buy some more and have them on 24 hr loan? EK to talk to library about providing more copies and changing the loan period Done

Any other business

Server for video editing

EK agreed to submit a bid for a server to network the video editing machines. EK Done
There was some discussion that the network link may cause glitches in the video editing. JSB to discuss with Gary Bown GB believes it will not be a problem if the machines are rebuilt without unnecessary software being installed.

Projector screen in Mercantile House

SB reported that a projector screen and a whiteboard have lain in the Mercantile Site Support Office for nearly six months. JSB to chase Roy Lightfoot Done and the objects had now disappeared!

Policy on unused computers in labs

SB reported complaints from students that lecturers would not allow them to use unused machines in labs during practical classes. JSB to reiterate policy to staff Ongoing

ISO user survey

EK and SB reported some preliminary results from the ISO user survey.

Date of next meeting
