Meeting to discuss various issues associated with video editing 22nd March 2005

Present:        Stephen Bellinger, Gary Bown, Alex Counsell, Ed Kopinski, Charlie Watts

Agreement that 10 licences and dongles associated with Avid software should be transferred from M2.2 to Lion Gate labs. Charlie and Gary were confident that the remaining licences in M2.2 would be adequate to cover next year’s teaching.

Steve and Alex to arrange transfer of software.                               Action Alex/Stephen

The prospect of increased student numbers on CT courses for 2005/6 could result in a shortfall of backup storage capacity. It was calculated that 1800GB of storage required. Ed agreed to discuss with Julian Lintell-Smith.                                                                                                                       Action Ed

Complaints that the LANshare server in M2.4 was excessively noisy. Steve Broadbent to investigate the possibility of providing sound insulation or moving the server into the new reception area.                                       Action Steve B

From the 2nd to the 13th May Charlie and Gary requested that Stephen, and Chris Beakes in his absence, be available to deal with student problems associated with video editing. Ed agreed and will arrange for normal support cover to be provided from the other teams.

It was agreed that all student files would be removed three weeks after the conclusion of exams in both the first and second semesters. Charlie and Gary would inform students that this would be done and that responsibility for making backups/copies of their work lay with them.                           Action Stephen

Gary said that Flash 2004 performed very poorly and has reverted back to Flash MX.

Ed agreed to contact Macromedia, to see if any bug fixes are available.

Action Ed

Gary asked that Sorensen Squeeze or Quicktime be available in the video editing labs. Alex preferred Squeeze but the cost would be greater than Quicktime Pro, preferred to Quicktime. Ed subsequently determined the costs, as follows:

Sorenesen Squeeze 4 Compression Suite                   £175.00 each

          Quicktime Pro         6.4                                             £21.00 each

Some discounting would inevitably be available should a number of copies be bought.

Gary to consider and let Ed know which application he would like.     Action Gary
