Computing Research, Consultancy and External Activities Committee
Terms of reference
(Agreed by the Committee, 16th May 2003; amended by the addition of departmental student reps December 2004)
Constitution
The Computing Research Consultancy and External Activities Committee is constituted
by the Heads of Department of ISCA, CSSE and CT.
Membership
- For each department, the Head of Department, ex officio.
- All professors and readers in each department.
- For each research group recognised by a Head of Department, a member of
(normally) academic staff appointed by the staff in the group to represent
the interests and views of the group.
- One representative appointed by the research students in
theeach departments.
- The Committee may co-opt other members of the academic and support staff
to provide advice and to assist in achieving the liaison functions of
the Committee.
- One of the members of the Committee shall be appointed by the Heads as
chair.
- The Chair shall appoint a Deputy-Chair from among the Committee's members,
who will act for the Chair in his absence.
- The Chair shall appoint an appropriate person to act as minutes secretary.
Functions
The mission of the Committee is to develop research and related activities,
and to raise our profile outside the University.
- Setting aims, objectives and targets for research, income generation and
other external activities, and monitoring progress towards them.
- Fostering a supportive environment for research and related activities.
- Monitoring the effective use of funds allocated for research.
- Providing a forum for the discussion of research issues.
- Monitoring research student progress.
- Keeping staff in the departments informed of the Committee's decisions.
Operation
- The Committee shall hold meetings at least once per term.
- The quorum for a meeting is one person per department and a third of the
membership.
- The research students' representative should not be present when individual
student cases are being discussed.
- Between meetings, discussions and decision-making may be done online.
- In an emergency, the Chair is authorised to make a decision on behalf
of the Committee.
- In the Chair's absence, the Deputy Chair may act in an emergency.
