Previous meeting's notes

Agenda Notes Action Status

Actions carried forward

Actions completed are noted in the minutes of the previous meeting.

Outstanding requests/orders: software

Mathematica

It had been suggested that the University should buy a site licence. AW reported that there was no demand from mathematicians for it - they were happy with the existing provision of Maple and Matlab. JSB to inform Chris Boorman of this. Done

Visual Studio .NET

Would take up about 6GB of space on each machine, but some of this might be sharable. Set up working party of SB plus Alex Bennett and Arthur Poyner to decide details of implementation. Done and met. Decided to install the whole lot (4GB).

Web browsers

It was noted that CAM students need to be able to compare and contrast different browsers. Standardising on one was not an option.

It was reported that the University had stuck with Netscape 4 because older versions of WebCT required it. The current WebCT did not, so it may be possible to move to Netscape 7.

A desire for students also to be able to use Opera was noted.

EK to contact Julian Lintell-Smith to confirm whether Netscape 7 would be available from next summer, and also if Opera could be provided.

Formal requests need to made to ISO by April.

Mozilla Firebird may replace the request for Netscape 7.

The proposer needs to include details of plug-ins required, etc.

Outstanding requests/orders: hardware

ISCA odds and ends

It was reported that Cheryl had ordered the requested memory sticks. EK agreed to chase missing odds and ends. USB sticks and Dave Prytherch's laptop are with EK

USB cables

It was noted that memory sticks normally came with a USB cable. EK to check with the pooled space technicians that they were aware of the requirement for USB access on all teaching space machines. Done. A programme of upgrading older machines is underway.

Strategy/policy

SB tabled a series of graphs showing logins per week by subnet.

The data is available in an Excel spreadsheet on the L: drive.
