Agenda Notes Action Status

Welcome

Actions carried forward

Actions completed are noted in the minutes of the previous meeting.

Software in Mercantile House labs

LB is updating the IS web pages that document the facilities available in each location (for Faculty of Technology). SG raised issues about LB's workload (he is also doing the IS website), but this is nearly finished.

LB

Lion Gate labs

Although JB had raised the matter of the environment and security of LG0.7 with FITC, nothing had yet happened. JB agreed to pursue this with SEC.

JB -> SEC

Printers in BK

JB's review of printer policy has elicited no responses, therefore it was decided to leave this issue for the time being. SG noted that Canon may be invited to do a review of printing for the whole University. SG also noted that IS may offer printers as part of the managed PC initiative.

Move of projector from BT1.05 to BK0.11

It has now been agreed that David Sherren of the Portland Resources Centre would be taking responsibility for AV equipment.

Research student PCs

Some progress has been made on moving on machines from old to new research students. MA agreed to draw up a policy for this.

MA

Tiger down time

JB expressed concern at the short notice given for the planned Tiger downtime on 10th November. It was noted that better notice had been provided for the downtime rescheduled for 8th December, and that the proposed dates for 2007 had recently been circulated for consultation.

A consultation about server moves during the Christmas vacation had also been started.

Outstanding requests/orders

Abbyy Finereader

SG to chase. SG

Endnote

SG to chase with Mary Withers. SG

CD printer

SG to chase with John Randall. SG

Adobe licences

It was noted that individual licences still had to be purchased for Adobe products, such as Acrobat.

New laptops

It was noted that the best deals at the moment were probably for Toshibas.

Cameras

JB reported that Portland Resources Centre had agreed to manage the issue of loan cameras to staff and students. Still and video cameras would now be purchased.

Strategy/policy

Nothing to discuss

Major projects

Nothing to discuss

Operational issues

Firefox 2.0

It had been questioned why Firefox hadn't been upgraded to 2.0. It will be, but it is not the University supported browser so does not get full support.

It was noted that WebCT does not officially support Firefox. Users encountering problems when accessing WebCT from Firefox should switch to IE to see whether the problem goes away.

Macromedia Studio upgrade

SG agreed to check whether the University has the necessary licences to upgrade the NAL'd Macromedia Studio from MX 2004 to version 8. JB to check whether it is wanted.

SG/JB

Staff printing in Mercantile House

SOC staff are now able to print to the student printers in Mercantile House. It was stressed that staff must not abuse this facility by sending large jobs.

Print quotas for students

All students in the University now have a quota of 200 pages. Differential quotas for different groups of students are difficult to implement because IS do not know which year or which course a student is on.

Any other business

Service review feedback

SG had talked to several members of SOC staff at length and had also had email correspondence with others. The three issues that kept coming up were: slow response to helpdesk requests; Windows desktop problems; GroupWise problems. SG has raised these with the staff concerned within IS and will get back to people.

It's planned to hold a Wednesday 5 with IS. JB is awaiting a date from John Rosbottom.

Christmas closures

IS staff have their away day on 18th December. Support will finish effectively at lunchtime on 22nd December and resume on 2nd January.

SG will be on leave 5-19th January. LB will deputise.

Date of next meeting

Wednesday 24th January at 1000 in BK1.07
